Bridgnorth (Impressionist)

The Funicular purring;

It’s winding gear and bull heads

grind, chasing the heady scent

of lavender underhill

while warm rain blots spatter

the rosemary and sweet pea

plants in the castle bailey,

releasing their sharp green scents.

A summer cloudburst reveals

the colour trapped deep beneath

the monochrome veneer

of cobblestones. Rain shambles

across the cartway – gaining

speed as rock yields to asphalt

– and joins the Severn, slowing

down to skirt the low town.
